Why does Excel always try to access the internet

Every time Excel starts it tries to access the internet. I am not running
any macros on startup and I see no reason it should try to access the
internet. Does any one know what it is doing during these accesses?

Thanks.

I believe that the help system is set up by default to search for help
on-line in addition to off-line help files. Excel is probably connecting to
the internet to get the help system up and running.

Just to add to Chip's response...

Maybe you can turn it off.

Tools|Options|General Tab
Click the Service Options Button
Click on the Online Content Category
and start turning things off.

Maybe you can turn it off.

Tools|Options|General Tab
Click the Service Options Button
Click on the Online Content Category
and start turning things off.

And also select "No" in the Customer Feedback Options category.

However, using Ethereal to trace network traffic, it appears that
neither option causes network activity when Excel first opens or
closes. (I am surprised.) Of course, there is network activity when I
search for something using Help.
