Why do I lose internet connectivity?

This happens to me at least once a day and I can't figure out why. I can
run an ipconfig /all and it gives me IP information. Also, I go into My
Network Places and it shows a connected status but when I go to launch IE I
get page can't be displayed. All window and NIC updates have been applied.

Does anyone knows why this is happening?

Thanks in advance,
newtechie

Is it just your home page? Is it permanent, or if you refresh will the page
come up? Have you tried accessing by IP address?

Thanks for the reply Chuck. Nope - not just the home page. No connectivity
at all. I have not tried accessing by the IP address.

Hi Chuck,

This happened to me again tonight and I couldn't ping any web address. I
had to restart to regain connectivity. I have 2 browsers and also AOL but I
wouldn't think that could be the problem. Do you think it could the NIC?
It's updated. Any other suggestions?

I'd start by finding out where you're losing connectivity, and is there a
pattern? How is the computer connected to the Internet? What node in the
connection could be bad - your computer, your router (you do have a router,
right?), your ISP, the server that you're trying to access? When you lose
connectivity, do you lose it for all websites? Do you lose it for websites by
name, or by IP address too? What do you do to recover (or does the problem go
away on its own)?

"Problems that go away on their own frequently return the same way".

Do some analysis - look for patterns.

Run a 4 part test, the next time you see the problem.

Hi Chuck,

I'm not sure I understand when you say were I'm losing connectivity. If
there's a pattern, I'm unsure but I do know that it happens at least once a
day and not at the same time. I connect to the internet through a router.
In ipconfig it says node is Unknown. I have 3 computers networked through
the same router and they do not lose connectivity. When the computer that
loses connectivity tries to access any webpage I get a page can not be
displayed error. When I try to ping using web addresses it times out and
tell me I have no internet connection. To recover, I have to restart the
computer and all is fine.

So I'm baffled to as why this is happening. Do you think it's worth adding
another NIC and disabling the onboard one to see if it happens?

The idea why you want to find out where you're losing connectivity is to isolate
the problem. Now, IFF you have multiple computers AND only one computer ever
shows this problem AND you know for a certainty that the one computer is not
unique, simply by behaviour pattern, (have you tried doing the exact same thing
from the problem computer and a non-problem computer, simultaneously?) THEN you
have isolated the problem to the one computer.

The detail about 3 computers you just shared with us. Do you maybe have any
more interesting secrets?

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/background-information-useful-in.html

If the problem is unique to the one computer, by physical distinction (not
usage), then go and yes check the hardware. But before going after internal
hardware (adding a NIC), check for easily diagnosed components like the router
port and network cable. And firmware on the NIC and the router.

Nope - no secrets. My network consists of 3 computers - 1 laptop and 2
desktops. One desktop is for testing purposes only and the other is for my
music, video editing, and other projects. The laptop is used mainly for
surfing, emailing, and chatting. I have a Linksys router that has the
latest firmware update which is v1.46.02. I'm for sure that this is the
only computer experiencing the behavior because I was using both desktops
last night and I was able to switch to the testing computer and verify if it
still had internet connection. When it happens again, I'll test the laptop
also because I didn't test it. My NIC is integrated with the m/b and I just
updated it last week through the Windows Update site.

Hi Chuck,

Ok - it has happened again. Here are screen prints so you can see for
yourself what I'm talking about. The first pic shows that I was getting IP
info from ipconfig. The second pic shows I tried to ping my printer and
yahoo. com and it shows no connectivity.

newtechie

OK, the first pic showed that you had gotten IP address etc. I'm not sure of
the relevance when connectivity is lost - you don't lose ipconfig information
when that happens. The second shows that you lost connectivity with
www.yahoo.com - but from the above, you're suspecting the problem to be
connectivity with the router. Enough fooling around - get PingPlotter (free),
start it pinging, and look at the PP trace when the problem occurs. Run PP from
multiple computers for best results. Does your printer return pings normally?

I actually downloaded PP Pro but for some reason I must have closed it out
so I couldnt retrieve the info to send. I had set up an alert to email me
but I didn't get it so I must have closed it out. I have it running in the
background now but who knows when I'll lose connection again. It took at
least 7 hours for this one to happen. The printer does return pings
normally when connection is not lost. I really don't think it's a router
problem being that I was able to access the internet from the laptop when
this happened. So now PP is active and hopefully I'll lose connection again
soon. Am I suppose to set up the alerts a certain way??

Thanks for all your help.

Ok Chuck - I've done some more research. I viewed the Event Viewer and here
was an error around the time my disconnect happened.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: MRxSmb
Event Category: None
Event ID: 8003

I clicked on the help and support center link in the error but it told me
that there wasn't any additional information about this issue. I've never
heard of this before.

An 8003 is normal, if it doesn't happen in large numbers.A master browser
election is a necessary part of Windows Networking. I can't think of how it, or
anything that it would be a symptom of, would cause a disconnection.

OTOH, if you were recovering from a disconnection which involved loss of
connectivity with the other computer, whichever of your computer that was NOT
the mb before the disconnection might have become a mb after the disconnection.

So that would be a normal symptom of reconnection.

Let's take a look at "ipconfig /all" for both computer please. And please post
inline text.

Both computers are on the same subnet, and have compatible settings. See my

Is there a third computer involved? ("There are 3 servers in domain")? How
about we look at browstat and ipconfig for all 3 (with all 6 tests run at the
same time!)?

Also, do you move Laptop around, or disconnect it occasionally? If Laptop is
the master browser, and it's not online all of the time, you could have
problems.

Yes there are 3 computers but I hardly use the 3rd one. The laptop is
always connected. The only time I would disconnect it is if I'm traveling
which is very seldom. Just another tidbit of info: I noticed when it
happened last night that it happened right after I signed off of AOL and I
think this happened once before also - so I'm not sure if that could playing
a part in it as well. Here is the info you requested for all 3 machines.
