why do e-mails disappear when I reply to it?

when I reply to an e-mail, the original message disappears. A copy of the
reply is in the sent item's folder but the orignal is gone... not in the
inbox or deleted items folder. Any idea what changed and why that is
happening. Thank you.

Change your view from Unread messages.
 
Thanks Gordon, but the current view is Messages. The only messages that
remain in the Inbox or Inbox subfolders are those I have not replied to or
forwarded. I can't find the replied to or forwarded messages anywhere in my
PST file.

Are you sorting your Inbox on the Icon column, perhaps?

No.. sort is on received date but an interesting thing. I did a sort by Icon
and then a sort by Received and suddently all the replies are there. I've
been doing this for 18 years and have never seen this before. I guess we can
always learn. thank you for your suggestion.
