Why did I lose my new email notification - envelope on desktop?

I used to get a little yellow envelope in the corner on my desktop when new
emails arrived in my inbox. For some reason - the envelopes do not appear
now. I get a mini-preview of the email popping up on my desktop as the
emails come in, but if I'm away from my desk the only way to know if I have
new mail to review is to open outlook and look at my inbox. How can get the
envelope notices again?
 
Are you using Windows XP? If so, is there a little arrow showing at the edge
of the system tray area (where the clock & some icons show)?
 
Thanks for responding. Yes I am using XP, and no, I do not have an arrow at
the edge of the system tray.
 
Hmmmm, is there anything there to indictate that there may possibly be
hidden icons? It's the default behavior of XP to do that after a certain
amount of time
