Why can't XP remember folder prefs?

When I export my Outlook Express address book (.WAB) I always save it in a
certain preferred folder. Saved PDF files always go into another separate
folder, downloaded JPG's go into yet another. Yet Windows XP only seems to
remember the last folder that I used to save something. Why can't it
remember that I prefer to save my WAB files here, my PDF files there, and my
JPG files somewhere else? Is there a program that's smarter than XP and can
remember my preferences? Thanks.

XP isn't remembering anything, the program you're saving from is doing
the remembering. If you're saving things in Outlook, it's Outlook
that's remembering. Evidently Outlook remembers on a "save" basis,
rather than an extension basis.
 
That's precisely the point! XP's programs and services are not remembering.
That's why I asked if there is a freeware program that is smarter than XP
and makes up for this XP shortcoming. But thanks for your input, anyway.

It's the programs, not XP. XP opens the dialog box in whatever
directory the program tells it to.
That's why I asked if there is a freeware program that is smarter than XP
and makes up for this XP shortcoming.

There might be, if the shortcoming were XPs, but it's not - it's with
the program. If someone wrote a program that caused XP to not honor
what the program told it to do, you'd complain about that.
 
I have Adobe Professional, a very expensive program, yet when I print a file
to PDF instead of to a printer, XP does it's annoying thing. That's why I'm
looking for a program that might be able to intercept this XP file dialog
box. It's a reasonable request, Al, you don't have to be so defensive of
Windows XP. XP does have it's limitations and this is one of them. I'm not
complaining, I'm seeking. There's a difference, Mr. Scrooge.

It is every program's responsability to save the settings and force XP to
show a chosen directory. This is NOT a XP "problem", but a Abobe one.

That's why I'm looking for a program that might be able to intercept
this XP file dialog box. It's a reasonable request, Al, you don't
have to be so defensive of Windows XP. XP does have it's limitations
and this is one of them. I'm not complaining, I'm seeking. There's a

Like mentioned several times, this is not a Windows issue, it's an issue of
the program used. There are programs which let you set a default save-to-
folder. There are programs that don't. In this case maybe an Adobe
newsgroup or forum could help you out.

I agree about the limitations of some programmes to remember the last folder
saved. Metapad will not remember, and it's quite annoying. Any ways of
making a programme remember or any suggestions on a plain text editor (not
an all singing one please) that remembers the last saved folder please?

I believe plain old Notepad does.

You may be saving too many settings in XP, and running out of allotted
history / MRU memory. I think there's a way to increase it. Maybe try going
into the "Tools,,Folder Options,, and un-check "Remember Each Folder's View
Settings" and re-boot. Don't really know if it's the same memory, but it
couldn't hurt.

I don't think the default path in the Open or Save dialog boxes is set
by anything in the MRU. (I think Word defaults to My Documents.)
