Everything was working fine until the wheels came off... suddenly PowerPoint
can't read ANYTHING! I receive the following error message: "PowerPoint can't
read C:\Documents and settings\... .ppt" or anything else (templates)... even
if I've Just created, saved, closed, and then attempted to open them... I've
a lot of time and effort involved in many-many presentastions that will not
open now... somebody please Help??!!

Hi,

What is your PowerPoint version (very important). Have you tried Help|
Detect and Repair? Have you checked for updates? Do you know if you changed
anything, installed new software or had a recent crash?

Unfortunantly this could become very entertaining because no one seems to
know what version PowerPoint it is! It's agreed that it was part of an Office
XP disk... that no one seems able to find. Just attempted "detect and repair"
and it asked for the disk! Somehow under "Help/ about Microsoft PowerPoint/
Sytem Info/ Office10 applications/ Microsoft PowerPoint 2002/ COM Add-Ins it
says it's never been started or installed... no crashes for the past 3 years
(amazing, i know), thought it was the fault of Norton Anti Virus so I
uninstalkled That temporarily (but it wasn't!). always installing new s/w
(but not directly before this event), may have changed some internet settings
seemingly unrelated to the problem...

Hi,

Seems as though it is not installed properly. Actually, my next question was
to go looking for COMs addins. Anyway, I don't know how you can really get
it fixed or re-installed without the disk, though. Checking for updates
(Service Packs) may also require disks. You may be sunk without them.

So, if you go to Help > About Microsoft PowerPoint does it say Microsoft
PowerPoint 2002? At the end of that line, does it say SP1 or SP2 or SP? Which?

Have you tried opening PowerPoint and then going to File > Open to open these
files? Do they open that way?

So you can create new PPT files, but you cannot open existing files? Is that
correct?

I wonder if it does have to do with Norton. You may need to manually
deactivate the Office Plug-In DLL as explained here:

Worth a shot.

Sonia: "Help About" says that we are running PowerPoint 2002 (10.4205.4219)
SP-2

I Have attempted: Opening from File, from the Taskbar, and directly
(clicking on the icon in "My Documents". Another interesting discovery: Word
has the same problem. Could this be the result of a virus? A few days ago I
was at another forum website in which someone had imbedded a chart. His
instructions were to "copy page, open Word, open document as html." I did but
the chart never would open. It was after this that I noticed the problem. The
two may not be related. I am almost sure, however, that both Word and the
PowerPoint problems are related.

Echo S:
You are indeed the PowerPoint guru of PowerPoint guru's! Manually disabling
Norton solved the problem. Who would have thought!? You have amazing powers
of perception and we can not thank you enough. There is a Santa Claus!!!!!!

Nah, the truth is, I just got lucky with that guess. Sometimes it happens.
:-)

I'm just really happy to hear that that worked for you, kodiakstation --
otherwise we'd all still be scratching our heads.

Happy holidays!

I thought the S in EchoS did stand for "Santa".
She's the one in the back row with the halo slightly askew.
