The link still says "maildesktop", but the actual name of
the product now is just "Windows Live Mail". It is a bit
different than what was "Windows Live Mail Desktop".

Do you think that they will stick with the name?

They make it sound like they will. But who knows. ;-)
They've made the situation quite confusing for many users.

Like you, I use Outlook and only wanted to use WLM for
newsgroups. I tried WLM, didn't like the lack of stability
and performance in handling newsgroups.... I went back to
Thunderbird.

I do wish they'd hurry up with the new Outlook Connector.

I still use WM.. it played up after a round of updates, but removing any and
all restricted sites out of IE7 security cured the problem..

The Windows Live this, that and almost everything is confusing.. and I am
also waiting for the Outlook link..

Microsoft said Outlook Connector would be out at the end
of May.... May is gone.

Outlook Connector. Available later this month in 11 languages worldwide, the new Microsoft
Office Outlook Connector beta will enable people to view and manage their Windows Live Hotmail
account from Outlook for free, with full contact, e-mail and e-mail folder synchronization.

Oh well, Microsoft has never been very good at sticking to
specific timelines and deadlines.

It's funny, today I received a newsletter from the
Windows Live Team. They made it sound like
Outlook Connector was ready. It's not, I went
looking for it. Teases.

I find it kind of strange (from a Microsoft strategic point of view) that I
USED to be able to read my Hotmail in OE, but I can't read it in WM.

However...I can read and write my Gmail just fine under either OE or WM.
The message of which path I should take in the future seems clear...

Windows Live Mail can read it, and there will be a 'connector' released in
the summer that will allow Outlook to pick up Hotmail too..

You are not the only one who has given up using Hotmail as a result of the
changes in Windows Mail. I was perfectly content using Outlook Express to
download all of my e-mails in one convenient step. Now I have to log in to
Hotmail and cannot transfer my Hotmail folders to Windows Mail. Others may be
content to waste their time while MS jerks them around promising "connectors"
and foisting Live Beta products on them, but I have no intention of jumping
through their hoops. Windows Mail is a joke! The spell checker does not even
work. Despite months of forum dicussion about it, MS has not offered a patch
to fix the problems. What is absolutely clear is that MS is not at all
concerned with meeting the needs and preferences of their users, but rather
imposing their flawed products on the market. The best message anyone could
send them would be to loudly and publicly boycott products such as Windows
Mail until is is ready for prime time and to scream whenever MS removes
useful functions from their "improved" products.

My next computer will be an apple...and I'm not the only one I am sure
this hotmail nonsense is the last straw as I pay MS for hotmail and I can't
use it on their new vista.
go Apple
Zen

The newer Windows Live Mail can access Hotmail accounts (when the servers
are up).
It works better than the Windows Mail which was included with Vista, and
hasn't been updated in over a year.
