What is the reason for this? I can use hotmail to post to newsgroups on the
web, so why cant i have the same for posting to newsgroups in windows mail?

You are confusing some things here.

1. You can post to newsgroups without an email address direct from a
newsreader.
2. You can post to newsgroups online via web-interfaces where you usually
need to signin to a related account eg a hotmail account for Microsoft
Communities or a Live ID for Live services, or a Google account for Google
Groups etc, etc.
3. In Windows Mail you can post to newsgroups - but you don't do this via an
email account

Does that help? - please clarify whatever problem you are having.

Oh, and you can connect your Hotmail with Windows Mail or upgrade and
connect the Windows Live Mail beta with the new Windows Live Hotmail. You
just add your online account details to the desktop mail program.

You can also now connect Windows Live mail /Hotmail to Outlook via Outlook
Connector:

With Outlook Connector Beta, you can use Outlook 2003 or Outlook 2007 to
access and manage your Windows Live Hotmail or Office Live Mail accounts,
including e-mail messages and contacts for free! Calendar, tasks and notes
can also be accessed and managed in Outlook for accounts with a paid
subscription.

Note: A non-Beta version of the Microsoft Office Outlook Connector is also
available.

Outlook Connector Beta enables you to use your Live Hotmail accounts within
Outlook:

Read and send your Office Live Mail/Windows Live Hotmail e-mail messages.

Manage your Live Mail Contacts.
Use advanced options for blocking junk e-mail messages.

Manage multiple e-mail accounts in one place.

With a paid subscription, Outlook Connector Beta enables these additional
features:
Manage, share, and synchronize your Windows Live Calendar in Outlook.
Access your Tasks and Notes.
