Why can't I uncheck R/O property on some DIRS on my C drive ?

I've got a directory tree on my PC that has a RO set that I can't seem
to remove. The files are not RO, just the dirs. This is a simple
XP/pro/SP1a machine. No domain or workgroups.

In fileexplorer properties the dirs have a grey check. If I uncheck
one it and apply, it looks like it worked but when I go back to see
the props it's a grey check, again.

I've tried tricks like forcing recursive RO on, then off. the dos attrib
command shows no R, S, or H bits.

a "attrib -R *.* /D /S" command didn't change anything.

Oh, yea, it's NTFS.

No app software is running that that might have a handle on these
dirs or files.

I'm running as administator and under "security" for a dir it shows
"everyone/full control". Advanced security settings show every box
checked for everyone grouop.

Help!!!!

A PITA. It took me hours to be able to describe the problem.

I posted the same question in a couple of other groups, the hard way
and a kind person gate me a pointer to a KB article that seems to be to the point
but worries me ("some applications may not work if you do what it says here....")

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q256614

I've made a quick attempt at doing the registry hack per the above
and it hasn't changed anything, so I'm still working on the problem.

Read it and see what you see.

Hello Al,

Q256614 does not apply to Windows XP. That article says
"For a Microsoft Microsoft Windows XP version of this
article, see 326549," which is at...

The RO attribute on a folder (directory) is meaningless in XP. The files are
the only thing that is important. The RO on folders is by design.

You Cannot View or Change the Read-Only or System Attribute of Folders:
