In earlier versions of Windows I could see the Start Up folder and put
in shortcuts of programs I want to run at bootup. On Vista I can't
see it. Yes, I've changed the configuration to show hidden files and
folders.

Right click on Windows Orb at the far left of the Taskbar and you can open or explore all users.
(the location of the Startup folder has changed in Vista)

In Vista, The All Users start menu folder is in:

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu

The user specific start menu folder is in:
C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu
