Why cant I open a .ppt file in powerpoint 97 or Microsoft Office PowerPoint
Viewer 2003?? It was made at a local college and contains information for a
class my daughter attended. So I assume it was made with a recent version on
powerpoint. The note included with the CD says it can be veiwed in
Powerpoint. Can I email the file to someone to see if they can tell what
version it was made with, or if the file has a problem??

Thanks, BKS81

What happens when you try to open it? Do you get a message? How are you trying
to open it? Have you saved it to your hard drive and then opened PowerPoint 97
and from there used the File > Open menu?

I get the message "Powerpoint cant open the type of file represented by (name
of file).ppt I have tryed double clicking on the file in explorer, saved to
hard drive, tryed opening file in file > open file, all ways to open it. I
even downloaded the new Microsoft Office PowerPoint Viewer 2003, but still
wont open. I'm stumped. Thanks for any help.

It is possible that the file has been password protected. Even if the creator
has provided you with the password, it cannot be opened in PowerPoint 97.
However, you should be able to view it in the PowerPoint 2003 Viewer.

Another possibility is that the file is damaged. Can you get another copy from
the sender?

I can upload the file on the net if someone is willing to download it to see
if they can get it to work on their computer. Anyone willing??
Thanks, bks81

Please provide the URL.

OK, but it will take a while to upload as its a 7.8 MB file and my upload is
like 43 kbps . lol I'll post the link when its done uploading. Thanks.

The file appears to be corrupt, not password protected. It won't open in
PowerPoint 2003 or 2002. PowerPoint 2000 pretends to open it, but displays one
slide with a jibberish text box. Open Office won't open it either. I would
recommend that you follow my suggestion to request another copy.

Sonia, Thank you for all your efforts. I will indeed inform them of the
problem and go from there.
