Why can't I insert sound on some of my Powerpoint slides?

I am putting together a slide show. I am using background music which I am
importing from a sound file. I want a different piece of music for each
section.I set the music to start on a title slide then continue for X number
of slides. It worked fine for the first two sections but when I inserted
sound files on subsequent sections, I can't hear them.
Also, why is it so difficult to get rid of that sound icon??

Don't "get rid" of the sound icon. Just drag it off the slide. If you get rid
of it, you get rid of the sound. Could that be why you can't hear anything? If
not, then you'll need to tell us a lot more. How are you inserting them? What
version of PowerPoint? What type of sound files are you using (WAV, MP3, WMA)?

The sound files are WMA's from My Music folder. I am inserting them by
clicking Insert>Movies and Sounds>Sound From File. I am getting rid of the
icon by selecting "hide icon in slide show" under Effect Options. I am using
Powerpoint 2003. Every other WMA file I inserted in the identical fashion
works fine except for two. I can't figure out why!

Use the method I described for hiding the icon. It's very reliable. Just drag
it outside the edge of the slide, either up down right or left.

Where did the sound files come from, especially the two that don't play? They
may have DRM (Digital Rights Management) applied to them which means that they
won't work in PowerPoint.

The sound files came from CD's which I bought in the usual legal way.
However you are probably right about them having some sort of protection as
they are Beatles songs. But why could I rip them to my hard drive without a
problem?

If you "rip" with Windows Media Player, depending on your settings, DRM is
applied. If you rip with other software to MP3, there is no protection in the
files. I use AudioGrabber to rip my CD tracks to MP3 to put on my iPod and to
burn to CD's for backup.

What exactly do you mean by "depending on your settings"? What are the
settings, how do I change them and would it help me?

I hedged on that because I haven't used WMP to rip tracks. I'm not sure, but
others have reported problems using MP3s in PowerPoint that were ripped in WMP.
I could be all wet. Give it a try.

This time I ripped it as an MP3 using WMP, but again it didn't work. Do you
think I should find this Audiograbber program and rip it with that instead?

I didn't have much luck with that program (I couldn't get it to work
properly). I got around the problem by downloading the music I wanted which
presumably gave me an unprotected version and inserted it successfully into
Powerpoint.
Thanks for your help.
