I can get through to most websites, but some put the address in the bar
across the top and then down the bottom it says done, but there is nothing on
thew page at all it is empty. They are good websites. One is elephant.co.uk,
when I go through to get an insurance quote another is greatuniversal.com,
the home page. I haven't blocked any web sites, and they are reputable
companies, so why can't I get through to them??

Search for your HOSTS file (no extension). Open it in Notepad or some other
text editor and look for the two URLs you're having problems with. Delete
the listing, if found, exit the editor, save the HOSTS file, try again.

Brande,

Check your MTU settings.

Sorry not very adept on the computer, what do you mean HOSTS file.
I tried looking for hosts on the computer, but there was nothing there.
I had another one today, Worcester university, never been on it before, but
can't get through, so there should be no files on my computer aboutit.

I have been all the way through the web sites that you gave me, but they all
seem to be to do with sharing a computer, but I am not sharing, this is the
only one that is on the connection for the internet.

Both those sites use Javascript. Perhaps you have your Internet options
set to disallow it. Check your security settings and if you are using a
third-party security program like Norton Internet Security, check to
see if Javascript is disabled there.

Brande,

You're right about that. The MTU mismatch is most commonly caused by either
PPPoE, or ICS, so that's the focus of the articles. But MTU problems can be
caused solely by the route between your computer and the servers in question
too.

Your symptoms - lack of access to specific websites, with stated no web site
blocking (though the Hosts file would be good to check too), are symptomatic of
an MTU problem. The AllenSmith and Annoyances articles describe how to check
out the problem.

A distant possibility would be corruption in the LSP / Winsock subsystem.

If XP RTM or Service Pack 1:
1. Backup and delete the following registry keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2
2. Reboot.
3. Open the network connections folder, right click your network connection, and
click Properties.
4. Click Install | Protocol | Add.
5. Click "Have Disk...", type "\windows\inf" in the box, and click OK.
6. Click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)", then click OK.
7. Reboot.

If XP SP2:
1. Start - Run - "cmd".
2. Type "netsh winsock reset catalog" into the command window.

Give LSP-Fix <http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm>, WinsockFix
<http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=257>, or WinsockXPFix
<http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html> a shot.

If no help yet, reset TCP/IP.

Start - Run - "cmd". Type "netsh int ip reset c:\netsh.txt" into the command
window.

I have checked the security settings and they are set at high safety and the
antivirus I have is Etrust and I cannot find any reference to Java script on
thier information.
could it be something to do with this etrust, as I used to be able to get on
the greatuniversal.com site, sometime before I had this software. I will
write to them and ask them if there is a conflict.
