I have posted twice for two different issues in less than two weeks and I
have not received any responses for either post. I just wonder why and how
does this all work that maybe I am not doing something I need to do to get
help. I have been using other ngs and that doesn't sem to be a problem.
Maybe, this being a busy ng, my problems do not seem to be as urgent. A
response would be appreciated. Thank you, Josie

didn't see any posts
but it looks like it;s working now

Maybe no one knows the answer to your question. Maybe no one understood
your question. Maybe you violated some sort of usenet netiquette. I can't
say, as I did not see your questions.

I saw your questions and they seem vague. I did a search for 7th Level and found the agent 7 media player helps with animations and
had some gaming use too. It is from 7th Level, Inc. which isn't Microsoft so has nothing to do with WMP. Now the .bak and .gid
files. Not knowing what files you plan on deleting, it's hard to answer. .GID stands for global index file and .BAK is a backup
file. Neither of these would have anything to do with a "slow startup." .GID is used by Help and if you delete them, they will be
recreated when necessary. .BAK is used by numerous applications.

It looks like through your posts that you've been deleting stuff and it also looks like you're not sure what you're deleting. I
guess my suggestion would be to post the true nature of your problem, the slow startup. How slow is it? Windows 2000 takes most
everyone a little time to startup, considerably more time than Windows 98 but it also won't crash with every little thing you do
because of the way it loads Windows.

What concerns me is that you may be causing slow startup by your purges. I'm looking at a post of yours that you wanted to stop
your BIOS from loading because it adds time to the startup. Without BIOS, nothing will work at all. To stop the bios from loading,
you basically would need to open the case and pull out the chip or smash it with a screwdriver or something.

What is the nature of the startup. Time it. If it is from 1-5 minutes, that's pretty much normal. Good luck.

This is a pretty busy group so messages can and do get missed. Two
suggestions: try to provide as much information as possible in your post
(don't be vague, as others have suggested) and create an appropriate and
detailed subject line.

As for the registry entries for the 7th Level software: JV16 Powertools
backs up any keys removed so it is easy to restore any of keys that are
actually necessary. Two things to note: JV16 is pretty good at recognizing
obselete/irrelevant keys so you can be confident that it's choices are
appropriate (and besides it does make backups). However if you are in doubt
leave the keys intact; I doubt it will have that much of an impact on
performance.

Your question appears to be a little misleading.
- During the past two weeks, you posted 3 times, not twice.
- To your post headed "Boot screen", you received two
immediate replies.
- To your post headed "Is it safe to", you also received
two immediate replies, in spite of the poor header.
- To your post headed "Are these registry entries necessary",
you received no replies until now.

It seems you're doing quite well, with 2 replies for three
questions within a very short time.

Keep in mind that this is a busy group and that all replies
come from volunteers. They give their time to help you, a
total stranger. Sometimes there just aren't enough volunteers
around to respond to every question. You might consider
donating some of your own time to help in an area where
you are an expert.

Thanks to you all who took the time to explain and clarify things for a
curious and eager to learn new user of this Win 2k computer. I appreciate
your helpful comments and suggestions and certainly will try to do better
with my "subject line". Regards, Josie

Don't get me wrong, your subject lines weren't bad, but with such a busy
group messages can easily be overlooked. So the better your description in
the subject line (and the message itself) the better your chances of getting
a reply. I myself still experience the same problem; I will post a question
and get no replies whatsoever. I'll repost a few days later and "tweak" the
subject line and (sometimes) get loads and loads of good help.

And a good tip is to always research your problem as much as possible before
posting to the newsgroups. A lot of people get very irritated (and will
ignore questions) if the solution is something that has been discussed
recently. It's always a good idea to search the groups prior to posting as
well. Google Groups (http://www.google.com/grphp) is a great first step.
They archive pretty much all of the newsgroups.

I think she referred to her post headed "Is it safe to", which
is unfocused and will not attract the attention of respondents
who must manage their time carefully.
