Why are some modify style options grayed out?

I created a new style. When I go into Format | Styles and Formatting, right
click my new style, and select 'Modify', I cannot change the line spacing,
alignment etc - those options are grayed out - why? (It allows me to change
the font/fontsize etc)

Hi Bennie,

Some styles are "paragraph styles" -- indicated by a ¶ symbol next to them
in the list of styles -- and others are "character styles", indicated by an
"a" in the list. You can set line spacing and alignment for paragraph styles
but not for character styles. It sounds like you're trying to modify a
character style. You need to modify the paragraph style instead.

Any particular piece of text in the document can have a paragraph style
(which applies to the entire paragraph) *and* a character style at the same
time. Depending on your Word version, it may be easier or harder to figure
out which styles are applied. In Word 2002/2003, use the Reveal Formatting
task pane. In earlier versions, press Shift+F1 and click in the text to see
a popup box that shows the formatting.
