Why are GIF/PNG saves so large?

When I save a PPT slide as a GIF or PNG file, it goes from 7 x 10 inches to
24 x 32 inches and becomes distorted and too large for viewing. This started
just recently.

What size is your slide when you open one of those presentation files and go
to File|Page Setup. Sounds to me as if your default slide size has somehow
gotten changed.

I think that's probably more likely than you changed image output settings
in the registry. :-)

To determine what the siaze was, I did the following:

Opened a PPT File.

Went to any slide that had a full (7.5 x 10.0 inch) face or picture.

Clicked on that Picture and FORMAT, SIZE, and verified that it was
7.5 x 10.0 inches.

Returned to the Slide and SAVED the same 7.5 x 10.0 inch picture as .GIF and
..PNG

Created a new BLANK slide

INSERTED the saved .GIF and clicked on FORMAT, SIZE and found it to be
24.01 x 32.01 inches

INSERTED the saved .PNG and clicked on FORMAT, SIZE and found it to be
24.01 x 32.01 inches.

Either of these inserted pictures required the use of the scroll bars to
see the entire picture.

Additonally, I took these .GIF files into Alchemy Mindworks' GIF
Construction Set
Professional and the size was confirmed. I took the .PNG files into XARA
LTD's
XARA XTREME Graphic Package and the size was confirmed.

Also note, I can save the same slide as a .BMP or .JPG okay. And, saving an
individual slide or a whole presentation as a .PPT, .POT, or .PPS works fine.

Does this help, or add to the problem.

If a place a picture or pattern on a slide and format and size it to 7.5 x
10.0 inches., it covers the whole face of the slide or slide background.

I then save that single slide as a .GIF file. When I insert that saved .GIF
into a PPT slide it is huge. By clicking on it and going into FORMAT, SIZE
it is now sized as 24.01 x 32.01 inches.

The same holds true for .PNG files.

I have imported the .GIF file in Alchemy Mindowrks' GIF Construction Set
Professional and it says it is 24.01 x 32.01 inches also.

I have imported the .PNG in XARA, Ltd's XARA XTREME Graphics package which
also says it is 24.01 x 32.01 inches.

Doesn't matter what they are in inches. How big are they in pixels?

Everything I have in PowePoint is shown in inches (with the " symbol as a
definer). How can I find out how many pixels are indicated by PowerPoint for
the item?

I took a .PNG file into XARA and it indicates a width of 3072 and a heighth
of 2304. The property box shows that the DPI is 307 vertical and 307
horizontal.

RonH

What is it you want to achieve in the end?

Are you using powerpoint to design graphics that you want to export to use
in another program?

Or do you want to insert pictures into powerpoint and have them the correct
size when they are first inserted?

Cheers

That's the problem then. Your copy of PPT has been set to export images at the
maximum possible resolution (assuming you have PPT2003).

This explains what's probably been changed and how to change it back:

I develop specialized layers in PowerPoint. I then save them as GIF or PNG
files.
I then re-introduce them as a slide in PowerPoint and use them throughout my
business. Since they contain material that is sensative or protected, it
cannot be altered by the various viewer because it is now one large "picture,"

Does that make sense?
