Why are all the old programs gone?

Hi all,

I just used a retail upgrade Windows XP Home cd to install
XP Home over a Windows 98 SE machine. I told it to
replace the current version of Windows and I thought it would
just install XPH over 98SE and leave alone and relink all the
other software that was installed in 98SE. What it actually did
is "DELETE" all the software that was installed under 98SE
and install itself like a new install with no additional software.

Is it possible to "upgrade" an older install of any version of
Windows to XPH and have the older additional programs
migrate to the new install?

thanks,
charles.......

Sure, it looks like you chose a Clean or New Install instead of
Upgrade. When you started the install of WinXP did you
do it from Win98 OS or just booted the WinXP CD? If the former it
should have done a Upgrade.

How did you start the install? Boot from CD or from within Win98? If the
former, you may have misunderstood the message, as it would most likely have
said another installation of windows was found, do you wish to install to a
different place or overwrite (as in wipe out and install itself), where as
the latter would have "almost" guaranteed the upgrade as you wished.

I booted to the Windows XP Home cd. If I had booted to
98SE and been at the desktop, what should I have done to
get the upgrade process I wanted?

If you had run the XP CD from within Win 98, you would have been given the
option to upgrade, ie. preserve whatever was installed.. 'clean install' or
'replace' install is not available when doing it this way..

Booting from the CD gave you options for which you did not understand the
consequences.. I am not blaming you for this or suggesting you are stupid..
many people in your position do the same thing.. it is very easy to do..

Not stupid, just ignorant.

Like I said, it is easy enough to do, and this is why it is so important to
learn some of the jargon..

Hi Mike,

Now that XP is on my computer I had another problem (see other thread).
How do I get past the boot routine where it just reboots after it shows
MUP.SYS. Tried all different boot modes. Never get to a command
prompt or a desktop. I searched M$ website, didn't see anything relevant.
