I know a member of staff in the IT department of a local College who claimed
in public that HP wrote XP, not Microsoft. I think that's BS of a major
order.

Views anyone?

The Windows development team is almost entirely Microsoft staff.
There are a huge number of people in the Windows group writing
everything from the kernel to the file system to all the other
subcomponents that make up Windows.
There are few small pieces that are produced by third parties - just
have a look at the mmc snapins on a Windows XP system and you will see
a couple that have a third party as a co author.
But on the whole the few thousands people in the Windows group are
Microsoft employees.

The only thing in common between HP software and XP is that they're both
bloated. With HP being worse, given that they will install half a gig worth
of crap when all you need is a freakin' *driver*.

But I digress... ;-)

XP is a descendant of WinNT. And NT was designed and largely
implemented by people who had previously worked for Digital Equipment
Corporation (DEC) on the VMS system. Some time later DEC came on hard
times and was acquired by Compaq. Compaq was later acquired by HP. I
assume that this is what your friend is talking about.

The OS has been changed and extended so much that there's probably not
much of the original code left.
