I've done a search but haven't come up with an answer .

Who can tell me what happened . When I opened an excel file , all my
tabs had dissapeared and the first column was filled with code such as
this
:9Û¿V3F¬¦"`>QK艘8Ø8\¤/°åÑ9³Xt?ڂ݇g¦XÍ'm¾“OQÎÛ\¢Üˆú0³ÎFþÅêëL‰mŸµæŸ´"ÿ7~X¨,}bð˜2¹U3$š›'ãÚQç¤

What went wrong , is there a way of recovering my hard work ???
I have my data on a memory stick to transfer it between work and home .
Other files work fine ...just this one is all

Any help is welcome ...

Your file has been corrupted somewhere. It happens sometimes. Did you write
the file direct from Excel to the data stick? You should only ever write
files to hard disk. If you want them on removable media, write to hard disk
first and copy to that media. Then, copy from removable media to hard disk
and open from there.

It may also be a hard lesson that you've just learned, but you will now see
the importance of backups.

I was afraid that I might get a response like that ...Back to th
drawing board for me !

Thanks for answering Pau

In EXCEL, click on Tools, then click on Options. This will
open a box with 8 tabs at the top. Click on View, then
look down at the bottom right and make sure "Sheet Tabs"
is checked. About the code garbage, I don't know.

Just a guess...

Did you accidentally open it in MSWord (and save it over your *.xls file)? If
yes, you may be able to open it in word and copy|paste to a new workbook--but
you will have lost lots of stuff.
