My computer crashed approx 1 month ago. Every time I tried
to restart the computer it came up with a message
about 'whistler'. I had an IT tech look at it and he said
it was a beta version for developers and software
companies to try out and assess for Microsoft and that it
shouldn't have been sold to me. I bought my computer about
4 years ago, about the same time the beta version was
introduced. It cost me a few hundred to get fixed. Now who
should foot the bill?

You?

Unfortunately, this is a lesson you'll have to learn the hard way. There
are some important things to know about computers, hardware, and
software. Always make sure you have a reciept and purchase from a
trusted/reputable source. Just because Windows is $5 on a website does
not make it legal or a good copy. Also, don't pay for someone to do
something that you can do yourself. If you are smart enough to post in
here, you are smart enough to fix the problem (Just ask your question).
Finally, Whistler is the Codename for Windows XP. I highly doubt that
you could have been running Whistler this whole time as it does have a
timebomb and would have expired by now. The only way it wouldn't have
is if someone had hacked the timebomb. Something tells me that it was
simply a skin or some kind of shell replacement that made it say
Whistler or whatever.

If you don't know what you are doing, ask first. We can help with
problems, but we can't help with decisions already made. You could try
asking Microsoft for the money back, but I'm betting you'll get a laugh
and then a "Oh, you're serious?"

You! It's your computer after all.

LOL, how it work for 4 years is beyond me, since "whistler" was the codename for XP, and would timeout after so long when XP went "Gold". You either are being truly disingenuous, or you got a hacked version of "Whistler" with your PC. The odd part is, that you're complaining about something that operated for 4 years without mention of having any problems otherwise; feel fortunate you got what most would consider long mileage from your PC hardware and software!

In any case, you said you bought your PC, which can mean a few things:

- Your PC four years ago came with 98 preinstalled, and you downloaded and installed a pirated version of "Whistler" and used it hence.

- Your PC manufacturer wasn't of the reputable kind.

Honestly, I think it is the former!

I do have one question though. What build is it? I am looking for the
icons from anything pre-build 2223 :D

Not sure, but I'm thinking this may still be covered under NDA as well :/
