I have very heavy disk activity for a few minutes at bootup. I suspect it is
due to one of more of the services that run, and was wondering which of them
can be safely not loaded and not cause problems. I use the machine only for
web browsing and other light duties.

Don't play with the system services, which you don't understand anyway
or you wouldn't be asking such a question.

Disk activity can occur for many reasons, like viruses and other
malware, disk indexing, background defrags, program updates, updating
your music library, creation of restore points, misconfigurations, etc.

Open the Task Manager and find out which process is occupying your CPU
to find out the source of the disk activity. If you have a third party
firewall it will tell you if any of your programs are accessing the
internet.
