From various readings it seems that not all patches are created alike, okay thats a given but how does one know which patches are necessary to add and which are to be avoided (if there are such ones)

Any direction in this matter would be appreciated.

Thanks

Microsoft has this worry free system called WindowsUpdate. Just go to
windowsupdate.microsoft.com and tell it to scan for updates, then install
all of the critical updates. That's a minimum that you'll need. Then you
can go through the optional updates and decide which ones you might need.
If you're not sure install everything there is. It won't hurt.

Thanks for your reply. Still though, after reading others replies to Updates that they've done - ie. KB828028 - they, other users have reported that this update has caused them NOTHING but trouble. I think I'll start to check in here after updates come out to read what others have to say about them, but my queston then is. If I read that a certain update caused someone's system to crash/freeze, send error messages or it stops major programs from running should I just NOT install/download it?

Please let me know what you (or anyone else) thinks?
Thanks again,
MEG

Those are extreme cases. I usually install all the updates on all of my PCs
and not one of them ever has a problem. You can always create a restore
point before applying a patch or a patch cluster and roll back to the
previous state if something doesn't work right.
