Hi, I have a Xp Home with SP1 pre-installed in my new pc. However, while
looking at the choice of windows update list, I saw two patches that are
deemed critical. First is the patch 822925, the second is the 330994. I
went to the download page (of each patch) and downloaded two versions of
each. In other words, I have four downloaded patches.

1. 822925 for IE6 sp1
2. 822925 for Xp ie6
3. 330994 for OE6 sps1
4. 330994 for Xp oe6

Note, my PC already have SP1 installed, should I install the version that
says "sp1" in each of the two patches listed in above?

You shouldn't have to manually download the patches. Use Windows Update to
automatically install the patches it recommends for your system.

While I'd recommend you use Windowsupdate to determine which patches you
need, if you insist on manually downloading the patches, because you have
Windows XP SP1 installed, you'd choose the SP1 marked files (1 and 3 on your
list)

Thanks Jason.

I want to save the downloaded patcheds in case I need to recover my system
which means the harddrive may be formatted with an overlay image by the OEM
recovery process. I only have a dial-up modem so I don't like to download
patches again.

By the way, I chose your suggestions (items 1 and 3 from my list). Both
patches installed smoothly. The IE6 SP1 now shows sp1; q822925, q330994 in
the version inquiry. On the other hand, OE6 "lost" the xpsp1 designation,
but the version did increase in numeric sequence. For example, before the
patch 330994, OE6 showed: 6.00.2800.1106 xpsp1... (after the patch
installed, it now shows 6.00.2800.1203 and "no" xpsp1... suffix).

One more question, after the two patches installed, I went online, a pop-up
message said something like this, "you must upgrade your Windows Messenger
in order to continue ...". I click the more info, it said it would upgrade
from 4.7.0041 to 4.7.2009. But, when I click yes to download, it installed
MSN Messenger 6.0.0602 instead. What happened? MSN Messenger replaced
Windows Messenger? In my task list, I now have "two" messengers, MSN msgr
and Windows msgr. In my systray, MSN msgr is the only icon showing, Windows
msgr sort of went hiding.
