Which graphics card?

I am building a PC with an Athlon 64 3500+ and 1GB of memory on an Asus
A8V motherboard. Its most resource-devouring use will be video editing.
What video card would be a good one to use?
Preferably AGP as there's no PCI Express on the board. Practically all
the reviews I've read talk only about gaming, to the exclusion of all
other applications. I don't want to spend 300 quid on a card that's no
better for my purposes than one costing 50 or so.
 
Video editing does not require or use the video card. The
CPU does the editing, therefore any video card will work for
video editing. A faster, high-end video card is designed to
render an image at 50-100 fps so a gamer will see a fast and
perfect picture and maybe not get shot in the back by a not
yet displayed enemy.

I would suggest that you want to be sure to consider the
source and output of your video. Do you need analog video
capture from a camera or VCR, do you need to import digital
video from a digicam?

I had realised the CPU does the editing itself, but I'm not aware of to
what extent the video card affects the rate at which the processed
images are displayed.

Current plans are just for digital input from a digicam.
 
Any of the new, 256 MB, AGP cards will suffice. The important consideration
would be variety of inputs and outputs. You may find, for instance, that a
card capable of dual monitor display would come in handy during video
editing. So would both analog and digital inputs/outputs.
 
You've got two choices at the moment as far as the 'market' is concerned.
You've got the Nvidia Geforce 6800 Ultra, and the Radeon x800. Both are 256
DDR graphics cards.

If you don't play games, am ATI 9200 or 9800 All in Wonder
card would be a good choice.

Hi, as for the X800's, some have ViVo, video in video out, that use a
special chip on the board for hardware video streaming. It might be worth
considering them...

I'll go shopping for a card once all this bloody Christmas nonsense is
out of the way.
