O2003 - Which contact fields can be merged, and can these be added to?

For example, there is one particular letter i regularly send out, where
I need to include contact name and address, but i also need to add a
membership number from their record.

Currently, in O2003, I have no field in which to add this, but i *think*
you can update fields on a contact card to add this (please also
enlighten me as to how this is done!)

However, can you then ensure that this newly added field is then
available for merge, or are such fields pre-determined in Outlook 2003?

You can use any Outlook field, even custom fields defined in a folder, in a
mail merge if you start the merge from Outlook, not Word.

If only i could work out how .... 'cos the route i'm taking isn't
working.

Select "All Fields in Folder," the type of document, etc. and then complete
the merge in Word.
