Hello,
I have a windows xp machine that has been running without any hardware
changes for a week or two. When I came in this morning I found a pop up
window stating that the software for my newly installed device required a
system restart. Asking if the system could be restarted or not. We have not
placed a new device on the machine. When I go to device manager I do not see
a device labeled with a yellow warning. How can I tell which device the
system just tried to install?

It probably was a USB drive. If inserted for the first time, xp sometimes
says that although no reboot is really necessary.

I was guessing that it was a USB, what I need to know is which one? How can
you tell when a device was installed?

Don't think you can learn when.
There's surely no event logs about that.
Probably you could examine timestamps on registry values
which were created for that usb drive...
