I now have a USB 2.0 and firewire capable system. I also have both a USB 2.0
and firewire capable scanner and external hard drive. I will be scanning
lots of photos (high resolution so I can edit) directly (software aided) on
to the hard drive. Am I better off putting them both on same input (USB or
firewire), or on different ones (one USB and one firewire), and which way.

Read the information available at your device manufacturers web sites first
before you make a permanent decision.
I would install them via separate types of connections [i.e., one Firewire,
the other USB 2.0, so that they avoid sharing the available thruput (is that
a real word) from just one type]. I would start with the Scanner hooked up
via Firewire (this guess is based simply on the fact more video/digital
devices seem to lean toward Firewire for some reason. They must know
something) and the external Hard Drive via USB 2.0. You can try switching
them around since, frankly, I doubt that there is any noticeable difference.

USB 2.0 has a throughput of 480 MB/s while Firewire has a throughput of
400 MB/s. So technically USB 2.0 is going to be a little faster, but I
doubt that you will notice any difference. I would use USB 2.0 as I
have found support for it to be better in Windows. On the flipside, it
seems that Firewire has much better support in Macs.
