My Norton 12 month antivirus package is about to run out, and I will need to
find a replacement. In many of these threads it says that Norton is not
compatable with Windows Mail, so which antivirus is recommended?
Thank you
Sharon

Of the free antivirus programs, the ones that are compatible
with Windows Mail are:

AVG free edition:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff
or
Avast free edition:
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

However, with either of those, during the install phase you must select
'custom' install, and then deselect the email scanning module so it won't install.

Instead of switching to a different antivirus, another option is to upgrade
to Windows Live Mail (WLM), which is more resistant to the adverse effects
of aggressive antivirus products: http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

Even with WLM, you must disable email scanning in the antivirus.

What problems are caused by installing the email scanning module???

I'm using AVG free 8.0.138 and the email scanner is running.

Well turn it off before it causes problems.

Will turning it off from within AVG be sufficient or should I reinstall AVG
without the email scanning component??

Turning off from within AVG should be sufficient.

OK thanks. Just found the reason by googling. I remember all the fuss NAV
2003 causing OE database problems. It never occurred to me that any email
scanner could cause the same problem. Was Outlook affected similarly??

I have to disagree. We've had several folks post here that just turning off
the email scanner brought no relief. Evidently the emails are still processed
through the scanner although no anti-viral action is taken. The extra
processing time can cause server time-outs, especially with large attachments.

Hello
Thank you very much for your reply. I have followed your advice and
downloaded AVG. I clicked on the "custom" option and unselected the email
scanning device. I have just checked my "sent items" folder and it now shows
5 emails that I sent yesterday and today, but all the ones sent between 1st
August and 10th August are still missing. Any suggestions for why I can't
see these sent emails?
Thank you
Sharon

I don't know. Maybe Norton quarantined them.
Check all the other folders, Deleted Items, Junk E-mail, Outbox, etc.
Also, go online to your webmail to see if copies of the sent emails
are there.

Hello Gary
I have checked all the other folders and the sent items are not there.
How do I go to my webmail to see if the copies are there (not sure what this
means)?
Thank you
Sharon

Practically all email service providers allow you to access your email via
the web, using a browser like Internet Explorer. If you don't know how to
do that, let us know who your email service provider is.

Sorry, I am really dense when it comes to computers (even though I work on
one all day!). Where do I find out who my service provider is? In
tools/options/properties it says POP3, pop.webfeethosting.co.uk and
smtp.webfeethosting.co.uk but I am not sure if this is what you mean.
