Set up new XP PC and when I drag a shortcut D:\xp to the desktop it shows as:
" Shortcut to D:\xp" . I don't want the words ' Shortcut to ' in front of each shortcut.
I THOUGHT it was a checkbox in Explorer -Tools-Folder Options- View but not there.
I tried XP Help but no reference.

Thanks,
Bobb

You can just rename the shortcut.

Bobb,

Here is another way:
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsxp.perform_maintain/msg/4236393d861f56d8

1. Create a shortcut to an exe file on your Desktop
2. Remove the "Shortcut to " string by renaming the shortcut
3. Delete the shortcut

Repeat the above steps 4-5 times, and Windows will no longer add the
"Shortcut to"
prefix.

Well, that did it. After the fifth time it dropped the "Shortcut to".
I'm surprised that it USED to be an option (in Win2000) that I could select , and now they've changed it to "learn" - without
telling me so in HELP.

Thanks to all.

This is also resolved with a feature in
Tweak UI

And in Power Tweak UI.

only in Tweak UI, you will need to set the remove "Shortcut
to" (3rd tab), and then reboot.

The "Shortcut to" item is one of Microsoft's dumber program
features.

I have seen monitors that have some 50 icons (shortcuts) on
them. If you remove the "Shortcut to" as you go, the icons
will alphabetize themselves.

If you don't remove the "Shortcut to" as you go, you end up
with a screen full of shortcuts, and they' totally random.

I keep 90 % of my most used programs in 2 folders on my
desktop.

Speaking of....

Is there any simple way to get XP to REMEMBER my icon
arrangement on my desktop so that if I crash, and XP
scrambles my icons, I can click on an icon and "fix" my
desktop?

TIA

Try this.

[[Icons - Lock on Desktop
"In Windows 95/98/NT/2000/ME/XP you can lock down the position of the
Desktop icons using a couple of files from the MS Windows NT 4.0 Resource
Kit.]]
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_i.htm

[[Microsoft's Layout.dll (free) file, which is included in the Windows NT
Resource Kit, can be installed on Windows 2000 and XP systems. This adds the
Save Desktop Icon Layout and Restore Desktop Icon Layout options to the
pop-up menus associated with system icons like the Recycle Bin and My
Computer. It's a bare-bones solution that lacks the useful frills found in
EzDesk, but it gets the job done.]]
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,1593475,00.asp

zipped layout.dll direct sownload..
http://www.nthelp.com/proggy/layout.zip

[[Make Desktop Icons Stay in Place
1. Download the zip file that comes from the Windows NT 4.0 Resource Kit.
Don't worry! It'll work with your Windows XP machine.
2. Copy the files in the .zip file onto the desktop. Then place Layout.dll
in your WINDOWS\System32 directory.
3. After the layout.dll is in the right directory, double click on the
layout.reg file.
4. Right click on the My Computer icon on your desktop. You should see two
new commands: Save Desktop Icon Layout and Restore Desktop Icon Layout.
Use them to save and restore your icon arrangement. ]]

Go to Microsoft's page. Ask for Tweak UI. It's on the
Windows 98 disk. For some reason, Bill Gates didn't choose
to give us one on the XP disk.

You can also find it at:

http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,2803,tfg,tfg,00.asp

I would personally avoid the "XP Tweak UI" version. It could
be called "overkill."

Then again, some would rather have 500 tools than 50.

If you would give me a real e-mail address, I would also
happily send you the program.

Then again, I'll check if I can post it here.

.....

I'll try. It's an rar file. I used WinRar 3.51 to create it.

When you get Tweak UI, right click on the thing that looks
like a gear, and click "Install". A Help window will open.
Close the Help window, and it will proceed to install.

If you don't close the Help window, it won't proceed.

The whole process if you're waiting to close the Help window
will take less than 10 seconds to install.

Once the install is complete, go to Control Panel, and the
Tweak UI icon will be at the bottom (Control Panel is
alphabetized)

Open Tweak, and I believe the 3rd tab is called "Explorer".

Toward the bottom, there's a list of selections. The top one
is check marked. "Shortcut to".

click to unselect it.

Apply
Ok,
get out of control Panel.

Reboot.

Your shortcuts should no longer have the "Shortcut to" on
them.

the QUICK way, is to create some 10 shortcuts. Rename them
as you create them. (deleting the "Shortcut to") Eventually,
you will find that as you create new shortcuts, somewhere
in the 10 - 20 shortcut process, you will find that the
computer has "wised up" and stopped adding those words to
your shortcuts.

This drives me crazy, too. But some genius at Microsoft
thinks we don't know it's a shortcut.

I suppose if enough of us complained, Microsoft or SOMEONE
would write a patch.

Yeah, that works,

but the question I was answering was how to turn off the
silly feature that creates the "Shortcut to" in the first
place.

I must use HUNDREDS of shortcuts. I used to use hundreds of
batch files in my DOS days.

It's a hellofa pain to have to stop and redo each shortcut.

And Tweak UI solves the problem.

Though my son pointed out, if you redo a dozen of them, XP
Pro EVENTUALLY senses you're making the changes, and it
changes the system setting.
