Where is the readability of a text displayed?

I have checked the box "show readability statistics" under the spelling and
grammar tab, but I don't see where the statistics are displayed for my
document.
The help says that it will be displayed after spelling and grammar are
checked.

Well, you got as far as reading Help (more than most posters). "after
spelling and grammar are checked" means exactly what it says: run the
Spelling and Grammar check, and *on completion*, the stats dialog is
displayed.

I have reset 3 times now, and run the grammar checker, but still do not get
the readabililty stats afterward, just the "grammar check completed" message.
I am set for both grammar and style, checked the stats box in
Tools>Options>Spelling and Grammar, and reviewed the Tools>Languages to
ensure that "do not check spelling and grammar" is unchecked. Is it possible
that the readability stats are an option I may have disabled on installation?
that was long ago, so don't recall if I did a standard or custom install.

It sounds like Word is ignoring the "Show readability statistics" setting.
When Word ignores certain settings, this usually indicates a corrupt
registry entry, probably the Data key. Take a look here, paying special
attention to the bits about deleting the Data key, so Word can recreate it:
