Well, I did manage to do this. I now have unique and descriptive lines in the boot.ini for each XP system. I gather that MS doesn't want this procedure made public (or they wouldn't have made it so difficult) so I wont describe the process in the public newsgroup. So, if anybody wants to know, email me, but change the building part to "look", without the quotes.
When I run the msconfig utility, it shows an entry in a source location labeled 'common startup'. Do you have any idea where that might be?
Thanks,
Hollis

Go to Start > Run and type in: MSCONFIG , and hit enter,
Click the BOOT.INI tab.
Next, click "Check All Boot Paths".
This procedure should correct your BOOT.INI file.
Additional help:
I have two installations of XP on the same partition

| I have two XP systems on this computer. They have identical selector lines when the screen that allows the
selection of which system to boot into comes up. There is one 40-gig hard disk, with three primary
partitions. In this system C: is shown as the System Disk and Healthy in the Disk Manager. There is no
boot.ini file showing in the root of the C:-drive. Where do I customize those system selection lines that
appear during the boot process?
