I have two XP systems on this computer. They have identical selector lines when the screen that allows the selection of which system to boot into comes up. There is one 40-gig hard disk, with three primary partitions. In this system C: is shown as the System Disk and Healthy in the Disk Manager. There is no boot.ini file showing in the root of the C:-drive. Where do I customize those system selection lines that appear during the boot process?

Go to Start > Run and type in: MSCONFIG , and hit enter,
Click the BOOT.INI tab.
Next, click "Check All Boot Paths".
This procedure should correct your BOOT.INI file.

Well, I did manage to do this. I now have unique and descriptive lines in the boot.ini for each XP system. I gather that MS doesn't want this procedure made public (or they wouldn't have made it so difficult) so I wont describe the process in the public newsgroup. So, if anybody wants to know, email me, but change the building part to "look", without the quotes.

When I run the msconfig utility, it shows an entry in a source location labeled 'common startup'. Do you have any idea where that might be?

Thanks,

Hollis

What's so difficult about editing C:\Boot.ini? All you need is
NotePad. It's a simple text file, whose location and function hasn't
changed a bit in at least the last 8 years. Microsoft has certainly
never made a secret of it; it's use is documented in a great many
Knowledge Base articles.

You have to be able to see it first. Neither PowerDesk, nor the Windows File Browser would show it, and I am pretty sure that I had already set the option to show hidder files, though I couldn't find that box when I looked for it this time. Otherwise, you are correct. Notepad did the trick. If it is visible on your system, then no sweat.

I hardly think it is a secret.
