Where does chkdsk put its report/log file?

Where does chkdsk put its report or log file? I've come across
cryptic replies to this question, along the lines of

MMC Console / Applications / Events

but this is all greek to me. chkdsk /? is no help and my only
manual ("Windows 2000 Pro: The Missing Manual") says nothing of
this. Can someone please give me more explicit instructions for
how to find chkdsk's log file?

(BTW, I did try running mmc, but the console that came up, which
I thought would be the "MMC Console" mentioned above, had nothing
like Applications->Events as an option.)

TIA!

P.S. What are better reference books for questions like this than
the book cited above?

If a volume's dirty bit is set, this indicates that the file system may be
in an inconsistent state. The dirty bit can be set because the volume is
online and has outstanding changes, because changes were made to the volume
and the computer shutdown before the changes were committed to disk, or
because corruption was detected on the volume. If the dirty bit is set when
the computer restarts, chkdsk runs to verify the consistency of the volume.

When Autochk runs against a volume at boot time it records its output to a
file called Bootex.log in the root of the volume being checked. The Winlogon
service then moves the contents of each Bootex.log file to the Application
Event log. One event log message for each volume checked is recorded. So
check the application event log.

As I wrote in my original message, this is all greek to me. How
do I "check the application event log"? I don't know what an
"application event log" is. Is it a file? If so, where is it, or
how can I locate it? Do I need to run a particular application to
inspect the "application event log" whatever that is?
