Apart from shopping and bill paying, I have little or no experience with
computers; now, in a new job, I would like to make a spreadsheet where I
could track orders, referencing job number, vendor, date placed, material
ordered, order acknowledged and order received. It emnbarrasses me that I
can't seem to figure this out by myself, but I can't, I need help.

Unfortunately, you're asking in the wrong place.

This newsgroup is for questions about Access, the database product that's
part of Office Professional. You'll need to repost your question to a
newsgroup related to Excel.

You don't mention the version of Excel but the link below provides info
on 2003 and 2007. Also if you search on Excel tutorial you'll find many
links to tutorials. If that doesn't help post back with specific question.

Since you are obviously starting from ground zero, consider learning Access
and doing what you want in a database. You will be very glad later you did.
A database is much more appropriate for the project you want to do.
