I recently created a dual boot system on my computer by purchasing a second
hard drive and using Partition Magic 8 to do the work. Here's my setup.
ORIGINAL DRIVE (30 gig)
Partitioned into drive C,D,E,F
C contains WindowsME and a variety of Microsoft Software
D contains all of my other software
E contains all of my documents and data
F is reserved as a sort of playground to work with large files such as
graphics and audio.
NEW DRIVE (60 gig)
G contains Windows XP and various Microsoft programs
H contains all of my other software
I presently empty
J presently empty
Partition Magic resides on the WinMe drive (the C: partition), from which
all partitioning was done.
The problem:
I set things up this way because I needed to make a slow transition to
Windows XP, to minimize interference with my normal work flow. I keep all
of my documents and data on drive E: so that I can access it from either
WinME or WinXP.
Recently, however, when I try to access a file from WinXP, I get a message
that Drive E: is not formatted (and would I like to format it).
Furthermore, the size of the partition is reported as the size of its unused
space (the used space seems to have become invisible). This does NOT happen
when I try to access E: from WinME. However, when I evoke System Properties
in WinME and look at the Performance tab, I notice a message reading "Drive
E is using MS-DOS compatiblity mode file system."
Can anyone suggest what might be going on here and what I might do about it?
Is a catastrophe imminent? I've backed up my E: drive and I'm trying to be
careful about backing up anything I add or change, but I'd like to get
things back on an even keel.
Thanks in advance your help.
Isidore
PS I've cross-posted this to the WindowsME group. My apologies to anyone
who might be offended.
