KB841978 refers to a file I can get from support. Since MS are being jerks
and won't give me access to email them (what gives?) and I'm not paying for
phone support in the hope that maybe they won't charge me, does anyone know
where this patch might be found?

I googled but only got a few pages refering to the KB841978 page (which
doesnt have the file).... GRRRR.

I don't know what you mean by "MS are being jerks". If you need a
hotfix, call for one. There is no charge for hotfix support. Tell MS
you are experiencing the symptoms for which you need the hotfix and
they will send you an email with a link to download the file and a
password to open the file when you get it.

It is very simple to do and free.

MS phone number for hot fixes in USA - 800-936-5700

If you are not in the US, see MS International Support for contacts:

I never heard this before, nor knew the number. Thanks muchly. I
don't need it right this minute, but it is good to know it is
there.

You're welcome. And I can tell you that the process works exactly as I
said because I had to call for a hotfix for a client's machine a few
weeks ago. It was completely easy and painless.

Except that it takes more of my time and effort to tell a support person
what I want, and why, and then I get to download it. Why dont they just put
the damn files on the website instead... What's the point of a support site
that makes you call for files?

First of all, the entire phone call took less than 5 minutes. You don't
have to explain; you just say that you have a machine with the symptoms
of "x' and you need hotfix "xxx" per the KB article. The email with the
download link and the password was sent before I got off the phone with
MS. The whole process took perhaps 7 minutes including downloading and
installing the hotfix on the client's machine.

MS doesn't make the hotfixes publicly available because they have not
had wide quality-assurance testing and they don't want just anyone
indiscriminately downloading hotfixes and then turning around and
complaining that their system was hosed.

If you are such a busy and important person that you can't take 7
minutes or less to get something you need, then have your secretary do
it. The amount of time you spent bitching about this in this newsgroup
is more than you would have spent if you had just been a grownup about
this and contacted MS for the hotfix.
