"Sophisticated animated GIF" is pretty much an oxymoron, unless you create your
own. Well, that's just my opinion. But you didn't bother to mention what theme
or mood you're trying to set or match.

I do a PP presentation for Sunday Church. Recently I saw a presentation that actually had a butterfly fly across the screen, not just sit in one spot and flap its wings. Somewhere "out there" there must be software that is more in the area I am looking for.

If you have an animation editor, like Animation Shop or GIF Contruction Set, and
if you have an image editor like Pain Shop Pro (comes with Animation Shop) you
can easily create simple and attractive animations. Think of the celluloid
frames that Disney artists used to create. About 6 -12 images of a butterfly
with its wings in different positions can be combined to make an animated GIF.
The hard part is creating those twelve images.

I'm just wondering, were you watching the butterfly or were you paying attention
to the content of the presentation? Animated GIF's can be cute, but they can
also distract the audience and diminish the impact of the message. A soft
stationary image of a butterfly in the background might be a better choice.

<cough> typos can be so much fun...

Larry,

which version of PowerPoint do you use? If you have PPT 2002 or 2003, you
can combine the movement of animated GIFs with PowerPoint's own animations.

For example for the butterfly you need the GIF-image of a butterfly flapping
its wings. Insert it into your slide and animate it with a custom animation
path to move it across the screen.

Kind regards,
Ute
