XP Home. Under Device Manager, Ports(COM & LPT), only LPT1 shows. No
COMs. Under Modem, COM3 shows in Properties. Why are the COM ports
invisible under Ports. My basic problem is that that I can't select a
valid port in a program called GPSUtility for downloading GPS waypoints.
All of the port number selections are grayed.

Many thanks,

Paul

Open the BIOS and see what is enabled.

FYI - Remember COM Ports use address multiplexing. Since your
modem has a on-board COM port using COM-3, be careful to not
enable COM1 as you'll end up with conflicts. If you need a second
COM port enable the second one in BIOS or configure the port to
use COM-2 or COM-4.

COM1 and COM3 use different Addresses, But share an IRQ
COM2 and COM4 use different Addresses, But share an IRQ
