Al,

Just a couple of points.

The release date is not yet set and no statement on approximate timescales
have been made.

The current distribution plan for Windows XP 64-bit Edition for Extended
Systems (name may change) are that Microsoft plans to release Windows XP
64-Bit Edition for 64-Bit Extended Systems through PC manufacturers and
system builders. There will not be a standalone packaged available at
retail.
However, this means that you will probably be able to purchase a copy from a
system builder or authorized distributor with an appropriate piece of
hardware to satisfy the OEM licensing terms.
Just as you do today for OEM versions of Windows XP.
So self builders should not have a major issue acquiring the product

Thanks. (I'll assume "Windows XP 64-Bit Edition for 64-Bit Extended
Systems" is microsoft-speak for XP for AMD64/Opteron.)

Yes, but remember it is also the OS for use with the new Intel processors
with EM63T
see
http://www.intel.com/technology/64bitextensions/index.htm

So it is not correct and will cause more confusion if people only refer to
it as "for AMD64" etc.
