when starting outlook, hard drive grinds and hourglass shows

for about 7-8 minutes. its likes its loading and you can't use outlook,
does anyone have any idea why it does this, it doesn't always do it,
ussually several times day when I turn computer on or off but it is not
consistent

What version of Outlook?
Are you using a PST file? How big is it? Where is it?
Have you run a defrag on your hard drive?
What's your operating system?
How much memory do you have?
