when opening a word attachment in Outlook it appears in thumbnail

Whenever I open a word (.DOC) attachment in outlook it appears in thumbnail
view. Then when I change it to normal view, any pictures that were in the
document are gone.
 
I suspect it's actually opening in Reading Layout view rather than
"thumbnail," which is a separate pane that can be displayed beside another
view. Wrapped graphics are not displayed in Normal view. Display the
document in Print Layout view instead.
