1. Windows XP with a number of installed patches (not at machine of ill repute)
2. Have a folder with PNG files which everyone else can open on their machines just fine, but I open the file and EVERY TIME I do Windows Explorer pitches an exception (don't have the details with me here)
3. The SAME FOLDER copied to a different location works fine for me on my machine
4. System Restore does NOT correct the problem
5. The folder parent and child were downloaded over the local intranet
6. Turned off "Folder Caching" (exact text not available as I am not at my XP machine)
7. Can view the folder in MSDOS mode, but cannot delete the Thumbs.db file as it has Archive, System and Hidden attributes (very curious, possibly a red herring)
8. Parent folder contents are xml files and the parent opens fine
9. Have folder set in Visual Source Safe (VSS), and upon checking out a set of parent/child folders which had xml files in parent and png files in child I found the same problem EVERY TIME I tried to open the child folder
10. IE Explorer version is 6.0.xxxxxxx (don't have the rest here to display)
11. RAM swapped out and same problem occurred, so RAM not the problem
12. Reset PNG "Open With" to MS Paint and problem still occurred
13. Problem occurs at user and at administrator level on this one machine, of the 3 other machines working with these files, none of the others exhibit this behavior with the SAME files.

What sorts of items should I look at?

- I'm planning on trying a CLEAN BOOT of Windows XP to see if I can isolate any cause arising from a non-clean boot
- I'm trying to think of other things to try before I throw up my hands and tear down the system and do a reinstall of the entire system and all applications

Any hints? Any thoughts?

I have the same problem and have had this reoccurring problem for over a year. It seems to happen with large PNG files. My PNGs are created with Macromedia Fireworks MX. Researching the web, I found reference to a bug in Windows 98 or 95 regarding a 4kb thumbnail buffer limit in Windows that is exceeded by large PNG files. However, I've found no solution to this Windows XP issue. Any help would be much appreciated
