When installing new programs, I am always asked by the
installer program to close all open applications before
proceeding. If I go to the task manager and close all
open programs, there are still twenty or more processes
in addition to open programs. When I try to close the
running processes, I get a message that doing so may
cause system instability, etc.

What processes should be left running, and what all
should be closed when installing new programs. Thanks.

You really don't need to go to the Task Manager for this. Just look in
your System Tray (lower right corner of your screen) and see what's
running. Right-click on the icons you see like the ones for your
antivirus and disable or exit. Check to make sure you don't have open
programs like Office or Internet Explorer running.

Hi,

Leave the processes running, just close the programs. Many of the processes
are normal system processes and should not/cannot be disabled.

Use msconfig it covers the apps that are suggested be closed.
