I just upgraded to WinXP from Win2K
I had 2 useraccounts
Admin
User1

When I upgraded, I logged in using admin, and then changed PW for USER1,
ever since, I have NOT seen ADMIN on the login, and I do NOT see it in the
USERS when I go to control panel.

What happened?
Is there a way I can migrate ADMIN files structure over to USER1?
Is there a way I can also grant rights or what ever to somebody when the use
a different install of XP on the same system?

Thanks
Bruce

No you didn't. The main admin account is *NOT* a "user account" and should
not be used for day to day operation. It is there for the times when you
cannot access the user account (e.g. if you forget your password) as if you
forget the main admin password there is no way to reset save a format and
reinstall.

When I upgraded, I logged in using admin, and then changed PW for
USER1, ever since, I have NOT seen ADMIN on the login, and I do NOT
see it in the USERS when I go to control panel.

What happened?

When you create a user account the main admin user disappears. This is by
design for security purposes. As you are using XP Pro, you can access the
main admin user from the welcome screen by pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL twice to
access a 2000-style logon.

Copy them from the main admin user.
Is there a way I can also grant rights or what ever to somebody when
the use a different install of XP on the same system?

No.

Hi Bruce,

The Administrator is the integrated account in Windows XP system and we
don't recommend you use this account for daily use. However, if you would
like to enable it on the Welcome Screen, you can refer to the steps below:

To list Administrator account on Welcome Screen, please follow these steps:

1. Log on with another user account with administrator privilege. Click on
start. Click Run. Type regedit and click OK.
2. Navigate to the key:
HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\UserList
3. Go to edit on the menu bar and go to New -> DWORD Value.
4. Name this new value "Administrator" and then set the hexidecimal value
to "1".
Log off the current user account.
5. Now the administrator will always be listed on the welcome screen with
the other accounts.

If you want to configure the Administrator account, please refer to this
Knowledge Base article:

298252 Cannot Change the Password for the Administrator Account in User --
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=298252

By default, the Administrator is not listed in Welcome Screen and Users in
the Control Panel. In addition, I would like to let you that we don't
recommend migrating admin to other users as you are unable to grant rights
when using different installation of Windows XP.

Replying from my friends system. This is the system I upgraded...

Thanks for the help.
It looks like I need to migrate the user files etc that were in the old
administrators folders to a new user account.
Right now, he can only get to his files when he is logged in as admin. At
least now we have access to the files.
I don't think I will set up the admin to show up on the login, as I would
like to keep that as a "protected" user

Thanks
Bruce

Hi Bruce,

It is nice to hear from you.

You can refer to this Knowledge Base article to transfer the user data:

811151 How to Copy User Data to a New User Profile

Regarding the file access issue, you can check the permission settings of
the folder. Here is another Knowledge Base article for your reference:

Hi Bruce,

I haven't heard from you in several days. I am just posting back to check
