When I type in the address bar IE freezes

I am running Windows XP Media Center Edition and Internet
Explorer 6. Whenever I type a web address directly in
the address bar in IE, suddenly the program freezes.
Pelase help! I have searched the knowledge base and
can't find anyone else with this problem.

Will IE work if you type in http:// first?

My son's PC has this exact problem. We've checked for spyware using Adaware,
Spybot and Hijack This - it's all clean. The problem seems to appear when he
has a few programs running and disappears if he closes some. If he types
http:// first it always works no matter how many programs are running.

I have seen others reporting this problem and the answer is always check for
spyware. However this is not the cause.
