For the last three days I have had this problem. I have not added any
programs or devices in that time.

At the end of the day when I shut Windows down I get to the screen where it
says "Windows is Shutting Down" and it begins to beep...about a beep per
second. It hangs there and continues to beep. It never shuts down. I end
up pressing and holding the power button until it turns off. The next time I
boot I do not get any error screens saying Windows did not shuit down
properly or anything like that. It boots perfectly and runs all day
perfectly. The only indication that there is a problem is during shutdown.

I am using a HP Pavillion zv5000 with 1 g or ram. The only upgrade I have
done to this computer was the ram, from 512 m to 1 g. I have several
peripherals connected by USB...printer, floppy drive, wireless keyboard and
mouse, scanner. But they have all been hooked up since the day I purchased
this laptop, back in Feb 05. No new programs or devices since.

I can't tell if this is a copmputer problem or a Windows problem. Any tips
on where to begin troubleshooting?

Thanks,

Nate

Check your mobo manual for the beep codes.

Do mobos beep during shutdown? I thought that would happen during power up.
But I will check it nontheless.

Thanks

Same problem but no beeps. It jumps thru all the hoops but when it gets to
the "windows is shutting down".. nothing happens. I, too, have to use the
button to shut it off. Thanks. A

Here's a funny one. But first I want to thank everyone for their help.

My wireless mouse and keyboard has a receiver plugged into the USB port.
That receiver fell off my desk and lodged itself between the desk and the
wall, burried in the tangled birds nest of peripheral wires coming out of my
computer. I noticed the mouse was having intermittent problems, skipping
all over the desktop and not responding sometimes.

When I noticed the receiver lodged between the wall and the desk I pulled it
out and placed it back on top of my desk and the mouse worked much smoother.
The annoying shut down problem also disapeared.

I have now double sided taped the receiver to my desk right behind the
docking station. It will not move now.

I wonder what else is in that vacant space between the wall and desk. I'm
not brave enough to pull the desk out and look.
