When I send an email, it doesn't leave the Outbox or get sent

I just got a new PC with Win XP and Office 2003 Student & Teacher edition.
When I compose an email and click send, the email appears in the Outbox, but
is not italicized and doesn't get sent when I click Send/Receive. Sometimes,
if I try sending a second message, that one will go normally, but the first
is still in the Outbox. I also notice the the recipient's address has single
quotes around it that I didn't put there. Also, the email appears under a
date group heading that reads, "None". I am confused and frustrated.

Make sure you are not composing the email while in the Outbox. And don't
highlight the message or edit it while in the Outbox. If it doesn't send,
drag it to another folder like Drafts and press send in the email again. Then
press the Send/receive button and see if it leaves.

I am having the same problem and posted the following in a message
just about yours:

I am having a problem with the status flag of some e-mails after I hit
send
and they enter the Outbox. In the Outbox the status shows the e-mail
as be
worked on (and open envelop with a letter) and not ready to send (a
closed
envelop).

I have tried openning the e-mail again and hitting send, but no luck.
I
have copied the e-mail to Drafts and tried to edited and then send,
but the
status remains open.

On occassion I can do a forward on the e-mail and then hit send and
the
e-mail will change to the proper status.

I usually will have one or two of these open status type e-mails in my
Outbox and then all my other generated e-mails will work.

Any help will be appreciated. I am running Windows XP Media edition
2005
and Office 2003. This same problem is occuring on my fathers machine.
He
has the exact same machine and configuration as my machine.

Thank you.

I have tried the approach of moving the message to DRAFTS and it works
most of the time, but not always. I have also just let the e-mails
that will not go out just build up in my OUTBOX until e-mails start to
send out. It usually takes to non-sent ones to get one to send.

I have to sperate machines with their own copies of Outlook 2003 and
the problem occurs on each of them. Also, my fathers machine
experiences the same problem.

This appears to be a problem with Outlook and I believe it started
after an update since one of my machines is older and the problem did
not appear until recently.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you

I appreciate your helpful response. At least now I know it isn't something
I'm doing wrong. I've used Outlook since it replaced MS Mail and never had
such a problem!

Does anyone in Microsoft monitor this board and brilg these problems back to
the software maintainers? Or do we have to report such problems directly?

This is the first time I've posted to this group. My original post
recieved zero responses. I have no idea if Microsoft reads these
posts over or not. Like you I hope someone is looking at these,
because this problem is very fustrating.

My older machine is running XP Pro SP2, my new one is XP Pro SP2 Media
Edition 2005 (this is the same as my fathers machine).

It seems to have started with one of the security updates or patches.
The reason I say this is becuase I was running Outlook on my older
machine for almost 2 years without this problem, and now it has it.
The newer machines have had it from day one.

I used to NOT have this problem but if you have NIS you will have the
problem and will have to be out of the Outbox unless you have more than one
email in the Outbox and all will go except that one email highlighted. I've
talked to both MS and Symantec and their lame answer is, well just change
your setting to send immediately! Some of us don't want to do that. So the
only option now is to disable NIS.

Elizabeth, do you have NIS?

T

John,
Thank you! Turning on the immediate send option did fix (workaround) the
problem. I don't like being forced into the "send immediately" mode. I'll
just have to be really careful to get the message right before I hit Send.
I do have NIS installed and I am not thrilled with it. I had Zone Alarm on
my old PC and it never intruded or messed anything up.
Anyway, thanks again for sharing this solution!

does it eventually send if you avoid looking in the outbox or does it always
get stuck, even if you never look in the outbox?

Diane, I appreciate your help.

Specifically: I compose a message while in one of my mail accounts and click
Send. The message goes into the outbox as expected. Then, without leaving
the account page (I don't open the outbox page), I click Send/Receive.
Instead of the message being sent and leaving the outbox, it stays in the
outbox. I have noticed that if I later display the outbox, the message title
is not italicized as it normally should be prior to being sent. I am able to
manually delete the unsent message from the outbox. This problem started
when I replaced an older computer that ran Win 98 and Office 2000, with a new
PC running Win XP Media SP2 and Office 2003 SP1. The old PC ran the Zone
Alarm firewall with Norton A/V; the new one only has Norton Internet
Security.

I've read this FAQ, but it doesn't describe or solve my problem. The
message

It's stuck in that it isn't sent when I hit Send or Send/Receive. The
workaround to always send immediately solves the problem, but I don't like
having to work that way.

Disable internet security scanning on email - I'm had several reports that
it is causing problems but haven't updated
http://www.slipstick.com/problems/outbox.htm with that yet.

Thanks heaps, that worked. It still doesn't explain why it happens though.
And it still doesn't retrieve my lost message. Is there any way to save a
message when this is happening?

Update: I was never able to find another solution other than having mail get
sent immediately. This has occasionally created problems in that I have
realized that I've sent something in error and had no second chance to
correct it. My wife gave me a solution for that... don't fill in the address
you're mailing to until you're sure you're ready to send it. It would be
nice if MS and/or Symantec would fix this problem. Otherwise, I really love
Outlook!
