When I delete message, even when I'm very careful to only click 1

When I attempt to delete a message from my inbox, even when I'm very careful
to only click one time, I'm having problems of inadvertantly deleting two
messages at once.
I have to be extremely careful, even in being careful, I'm still deleting
the intended message and the message below it! Which sends me to my deleted
box hunting for the accidentally deleted items.
Is this an issue with my mouse? Nothing is new here, I've had the same
Microsoft Outlook program, the same keyboard, monitor, CPU, mouse, etc., and
while I've always had to be careful, it seems the 'delete' problem has gotten
worse and no matter how I try and delete one message at a time, it's sucking
in the one below it too!
The method I use for deleting individual (wishful!) messages is clicking on
the X in the Outlook toolbar.
Can anyone help me with this?

What happens when you highlight the message and hit the Del key?
 
Thanks Mary. While the method you describe certainly solves the problem,
it's too time consuming of a process. I did however, go to the Control Panel
and look at my Double-Click settings on my mouse. Even though I wasn't
double clicking before, I guess the DC speed effects the overall
timing/performance. It was on the fastest possible setting and I've slowed
it down. I think this will do the trick.

I had to replace my mouse recently because every single-click resulted
in a double-click; maybe something similar is occurring to you.

Instead of clicking on the 'x' in Outlook, you can use the 'Del' key -
which is much faster anyway.

Then you know exactly what I'm talking about! That's as comforting as a
solution (almost)! The strangest thing is nothing has changed with my mouse,
Outlook, etc., etc., and I know it hasn't always done this! It's been
happening for approx. 2-3 weeks now. Slowing down my "double-click speed" on
my mouse (in the Control Panel) seems to have helped.
 
Thanks for your reply Vanguard - that idea occured to me yesterday as well.
And it seems to be a viable solution.
While I slowed down my double-click speed (and even though I'm only 'single'
clicking) I still feel that using the mouse to delete via the X on the
toolbar isn't 100% safe.
Using the delete key on the keyboard may be the solution - I'm going to try
is throughout the day today.

How old is the mouse? I've have them go bad where the switch gets worn
enough so that it bounces which causes multiple clicks or the button
gets positioned so low that the slightest touch cause a click. Tried a
different mouse yet? They're cheap (unless you're fanatic to have one
with lots of buttons and gizmo functions).
