when excel opens

When I open Excel either by its icon on the desktop or
start menu or double clicking on a file, Excel opens or
tries to open every file in the directory set as the
primary place to store files. How do I stop this ?
 
You sure it's the default folder that's causing the trouble.

It sounds more like:
Tools|Options|General Tab:
"at startup, open all files in:" <xl2002 wording>
"Alternate Startup File location" <before xl2002 wording>

Most people (all that I know) have this box empty.
 
you were absolutely correct, i cleared the box and the
problem vanished. go try to search help for this.
