What's wrong with my XP

I have been using XP Prof since May when I made a new
install to a new Tyan Trinity motherboard, with 512
RAM, Celeron chip & 2 disks: an 80GB & an 8GB slave. the
progs are on the 80GB & my data on the 8GB. I have been
having very perplexing problems since. Internet explorer
seems to work ok & so does outlook express mail. However,
when I try to subscribe to newsgroups with outlook I get
the error msg: "undetermined system error." I am writing
this on my work computer because I can't use my home
computer for NG's. I find this extremely
%$#%)@-frustrating.
Several other probs: I can't print from DOS. I have DBase
4, which I've had for years & am fond of, but when I send
anything to the printer from DB4, nothing happens, no error
msg either. I have been told that XP is very buggy with
DOS, so that might explain it-but I doubt it.
My wife uses WP8 (admittedly a rather old prog written for
win95. When she uses the spell check, WP8 terminates with
an illegal error command. The event log is full of
references to this. Unfortunately, because I can't write
this from home, I'm at work & don't remember the msg. WP8
functions on her work computer which also has XP prof. I
have tried the win95 compatibility window & it makes no
difference.
It was suggested that I format the disk & reinstall XP, but
that is a HUGE project & I have a feeling that after I do
it, it will be the same.
Please help
Ron

There is no DOS in Windows XP. Also, Windows XP can usually not support
software written for Windows 95 and earlier. You might try running your
software in compatibility mode.
