whats happening at any given moment?

i was doing absolutely nothing on my pc with a blank screensaver on-cause i
was watching something that caught my attention on tv for maybe 10min.--then
out of the blue, i heard the dvdrw start running (had a game cd in it) then
stop after say 20sec.--what i'm wondering is--is their a program that logs
everything that happens on a pc that anybody knows of? that could have logged
what did that, and anything else?
